Gods by Grace: An Explanation of the Catholic Doctrine of Deification

Jan 08, 2026

There are so many beautiful truths in our Catholic faith.

So much to marvel at - from the mind-blowing mystery of Christ's Incarnation, to the incredible gift of Mary as our Mother...

...from the powerful graces extended to us in the sacraments, to the unfathomable connection we all share as members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

But there's one astonishing Catholic doctrine that encompasses the whole of Church teaching, is knock-your-socks-off awe-inspiring - and yet is hardly talked about!

It's the doctrine of Deification, and it's found all throughout the teachings of the Church Fathers, in Scripture, and in the Catechism - but most Catholics today have never even heard of it.

Deification (also known as divinization) is the Church teaching that through his gift of love, God allows us to actually share in his divinity so that we can truly be a part of His family...we can truly be divine.

As St. Athanasius said, "For he was made man that we might be made God."

That said, this topic is so unusual, so unfamiliar, and so extraordinary, that it needs careful treatment.

And that's exactly how Dr. Daniel Keating and I approach it in this fascinating episode of the Art of Catholic podcast.

  • What the Saints say about Deification
  • How Martin Luther & John Calvin believed in Deification
  • Does Deification blur the lines between God and man?
  • What are the major misunderstandings surrounding Deification?

However you imagine heaven to be, this podcast will open your eyes to an even deeper understanding of God's breath-taking love, and leave you awe-struck at all that he has in store for us.

Have a blessed New Year,
