Fighting Gluttony & the Tragedy of Butter...Yes, Butter.

Jul 22, 2026

OK, Matthew, you're probably saying, what's all this about butter being a tragedy? Aren't you going a little bit overboard here?

For the record, I've got nothing against butter. Some of my best friends are butter.

Even so, butter isn't really what we're talking about here.

What we are talking about is one of the seven deadly sins - the one that many of us don't really take seriously enough.

Gluttony.

I can hear the groans already.

C'mon, Matthew - it's not even Lent! All that fasting and abstinence stuff doesn't even apply till then, right? Aren't we allowed to just enjoy our food?

Yes, of course, we can (and should) enjoy our food...but perhaps not quite as much as we often do.

So to help us understand gluttony, I thought I'd share a great story from St. Josemaria Escriva about a priest who fought a very personal daily battle against butter.

(That's where the butter comes into play.)

Check it out on today's Sainthood Snippet.

God bless,

Matthew
