Practicing penance is hard.
And I'm not talking about the '3 Hail Marys and an Our Father' penance you get after confession.
I'm talking about mortifications like fasting, turning down the hot water in the shower, or even just accepting the sufferings that God sends you in your life.
How often have we white knuckled our way through those last few weeks of Lent, or hung on by a thread when dealing with some kind of suffering?
But what is God's view?
How does he want us to approach penance and mortification?
Well, if anyone should know, it would be a hermit - someone dedicated to the penitential life.

It's advice on how to practice it so as to actually gain merit for our troubles.
And I'll give you a hint - there's no white knuckling involved.
God bless!
