Even though Adam and Eve were created in the "image" and "likeness" of Almighty God, they were lacking something - divinity. Even so, they wanted it...badly.
And so do we...
"No earthly pleasures, no kingdoms of this world can benefit me in any way. I prefer death in Christ Jesus to power over the limits of the earth. He who died in place of us is the one object of my quest.
He who rose for our sakes is my one desire. Do not talk about Jesus Christ as long as you love this world."
St. Ignatius of Antioch
"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.'
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
Genesis 1:26-27
The reason why each of us has a longing to be divine is because that's what were created for from the beginning. God made Adam and Eve in his image and likeness.
He made us to be part of his Divine family.
That's the gnawing in our heart, the hunger that can never be satiated this side of heaven. Unfortunately, we try and satiate this hunger with the distractions of this world, though we know they never satisfy.
The "new car smell" always goes away.
But until we realize this, and begin to focus our attention on the only thing that can satisfy us - a deep relationship with the God of the universe - we'll never ascend very high on the spiritual ladder.
Ask the Lord in prayer to help you see the shallowness of only living for this world, and to be filled with the desire for Christ alone.
